Who is Angela?

Angela is the reason we're all here. Born and raised in New Orleans, Angie has spent her entire life battling the systems that keep so many Americans in a state of financial poverty, consequently making things like health, healing, and the pursuit of happiness into near-unachievable luxuries.

Angela is courageous, hard-working and resilient. Through severe chronic health issues (not to mention racism, classism, maltreatment by the justice system and labor/wage exploitation by countless employers), Angie has persevered to fight for the welfare and dignity of herself and her beloved son.

When life became untenable for them in New Orleans, Angela teamed up with one of her son's former teachers (our founder!) to share their story and raise the money for them to relocate to Birmingham, leaving her entire life behind to create a better one for her son.

She and the teacher— who was facing her own health issues without the added stressors of poverty— became so close along the way that Angela became the namesake and central inspiration for our work, while the success of moving strangers to compassion by sharing her story gave rise to our mutual-aid fundraising framework and the creation of our slogan, Share Whatcha Got.

Angela is now Vice President of our board and an influential voice in our trajectory. She and her son are a shining example of the importance of our mission and mantra at Mother Angela's-- when you share whatcha got, you can change quite a lot!
